FOR CONTEXT: Fire icons are for locations. The size of the icons does not equate to the literal size of the fires.

Couldn’t you possibly also be more accurate by rotating Australia 180°? To account for what’s closer to the pole?
-
You could, but they’re not at the same latitudes. Melbourne (southernmost part of the mainland) would be the same latitude as San Francisco, while Darwin (far north) would be down around Nicaragua

Perspective is everything.

except that this graphic is very misleading because so far 15 million acres have burned - which is the size of west virginia. which is of course still horrible... i’m not sure who made this, but it’s insanely inaccurate.

We get fires here in Aus every year, and they've certainly been getting worse every year, but the jump from last year to this year is something else. I'm one of the lucky ones up here in Brisbane, QLD, it's been relatively quiet around here.
-
That chart seems to indicate Brisbane is on fire though. I saw a Google maps version of this where you can zoom in and see specifically where the fires are.https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-50951043?app=news.world.australia.story.50951043.page …
