After much deliberation, I have decided that I will not use my presence at a state ceremony to normalize Trump’s lawless conduct & subversion of the Constitution. None of this is normal, and I will not legitimize it. Consequently, I will not be attending the State of the Union.

I will leave it to others to assess the facts and the politics, but as an American who loves my country, who has seen the bloody price of hate and division, my takeaway is an abiding sadness. Past presidents always at least pretended they were president of the entire nation.
