It does have a more honest ring to it now -- though I wonder if that's because we don't quite believe in glory anymore -- which is to say did it used to seem as falsely objective as status does now? (assuming I intuited your objection correctly)

Status has this quasi scientific feel to it. But real judgement is entirely aesthetic. “So and so is high status” vs “so and so is a man of great honor” or “so and so courses with glory.”

Or as one tweeter pointed out: “honor.” Glory requires action. Status and honor can be inherited. Glory must be earned.

Doesn't your Tolkienic hero essay point out that moderns can't justify the heroic pursuit of glory to themselves anymore? Tbh I thought we switched to status because we don't believe in the glory of glory

It does. But it is really the exact same thing under different names. Humans want renown and regard, whatever you call it. “A rose under any other name...”

I'm sold. Gloryfing myself sounds metal, while striving for higher status sounds like something for careerist aspirationists.

Honor and position are also good to. Status seeking can probably be more accuratly divided into those three.
