Reed Scherer: (Paleo) Climate Scientist, Diatomaniac, Glaciophile, Paleophile, Antarctican, Oceanophile, Culinista, NIU Professor, I strive for global justice
A huge congratulations to Dr Sandra Hermann for being selected for this prestigious @NASA training! The #IODP community is so proud of you.
Sandra was my counterpartner on the other @TheJR crew. I can't wait to follow her journey.

This will come as absolutely no surprise to anybody.

paleo collection. No idea how/when it came. Simply labeled "animal tracks, Connecticut, Triassic", with an ink number on the back. I think it must be baby dinos! Potentially from James Deane's original collection?
Your thoughts?
Honoring my dad on #VeteransDay. He remains to this day a force of nature and is still fighting for "Truth, Justice and the American Way".
Yes, my dad is Superman. #WWII
I've still got some belemnites I collected from the Pee Dee Formation in South Carolina 30 years ago. Don't think it was the same outcrop Urey used, though. What's the fractionation?
isn't regularly referred to as an #oligarch? There's literally nobody on the planet who fits the bill in its modern usage like he does. You can't have to be Russian to be one anymore. Especially if you love Putin!
A "long-term science" story I like: In the 1700s, people living on the coast of the Baltic Sea noticed a curious thing... the sea level appeared to be inexplicably falling. Why? 1/9
Here's my student River on our Historical Geology field trip in Illinois Canyon. I proposed a caption/meme contest to class.
Winner: "When the Wordle for the day is "rocks" and you get it on your first try"
Runner-up: "There can only be one River"

"Voters See Democracy in Peril, but Saving It Isn’t a Priority"
Onion headline? Hardly!
This week's gas price won't matter soon but representative democracy is critical to any kind of decent future!
Think then vote!
Wow. Just a few miles from me. I'm glad they're still out there (as long as they keep to themselves). Losing a rare and beautiful animal to a car is so sad.
Mountain lion struck and killed on Interstate 88 in DeKalb County
geology field trip today at Starved Rock & Matthiessen state parks. Great geology, great fossils, great students, great fall weather, great nature, great fun!
I know what you're thinking: Illinois has geology!?
Yes, it does!
I am so stealing this for my intro ocean science class. I already use Spilhaus with the title "The world according to fish". This version adds new levels of important and understandable detail for students. Thanks Huw!
Working on a proposal and made this, it turned out nicely! It is the Spilhaus projection of the global ocean with @oceans_and_ice's global currents overlaid onto Niklas Röber's sea surface temperature & velocity! #Antarctica and the #SouthernOcean at the heart of our planet!
at his thesis defense. But needless to say it went well😊.
Congratulate him!
N.B., If you're an Antarctic climate scientist looking for a new Ph.D. student you couldn't do better! You might want to snap him up. He'll be applying soon.
Last time I was aboard Wavertree (1885) was 45 years ago. She was an unrestored hulk then. I was sailing north from Virgin Islands toward Maine on the schooner Harvey Gamage. We spent 2 nights at South Street Seaport. Time does fly…. My love of the sea is as great as ever.
Joe is a gem! He did a fabulous MS thesis with me on diatom-based paleotemperatures in the Amundsen Sea and he deserves the best opportunity available. He could not possibly come more highly recommended! He's a star in the making.
Looking for a PhD position!
This oct I am defending my MS: southern ocean micropaleo, paleoSST, ocean-ice sheet interaction.
I hope to broaden my skillset and step into polar sed/strat!
Strong foundation in SO dynamics
Please share/DM if you have any leads, career advice etc!
Wooohooo! I got unanimous support from both my departments for promotion to full professor a year early! There are still a few other hoops to jump, but this was the most significant so I think I'm good.
I've certainly never promoted a company on Twitter, but this seems real. If only more billionaires & companies had this sense of purpose and global responsibility. #Patagonia

One of the last wooden hulled ships in the British Navy. Maybe now that he's king they'll somehow find the money to restore HMS Bronington (one of the last wooden-hulled ships in the British Navy).
They should let me know if they want their hat back.
In 1978 I was in a bar in Sønderborg, . I vaguely remember a drunken conversation with a drunk Dane wearing this hat. He got it from a drunk British sailor & I got it from him. HMS Bronington was commanded by (Prince) #KingCharlesIII in 1976. She sank in 2016 & is still there.
