Me: Democracy is messy and contentious and uncertain. That’s what makes it glorious. Also me: Invite international monitors en masse before public cynicism becomes permanent.

You might have to squint to see it, but someone managed to sneak “rule of law” into this list. Right there between agriculture and non-proliferation.

This will not help to advance US interests in Central Asia.

The thing happening right now in the US Senate is as much a trial as I am an NBA all-star.

2020: I miss the 1990s. 2050: I miss the 2020s. or, 2050: Wow, the 2020s were really a scary low-point in global governance. Thank heavens we extricated ourselves from that.

Please don't evaluate the impact of a US foreign policy action by whether the result was war within the week. Such actions have impacts that are diffuse, longer-term, probabilistic, and hard to predict. That doesn't make them any less consequential. 2/3

Killing Soleimani didn't cause war. Genuinely relieved. But: 1. Surviving a game of Russian roulette doesn't suddenly change the fact that it was stupid to play. 2. Not dying immediately from lead-laced drinking water doesn't mean you should fill your bottles with the stuff. 1/3

Wait for the actual evidence in times of twitter-propelled panic? A very noble idea. Let’s give it a shot.
