The Texas House just voted 92-48 to give initial approval to SB14, a bill that bans life-saving treatment to trans youth. Highest uninsured rate, weekly mass shootings, a broken power grid—and this is what the legislature is focused on. bit.ly/3OdWCRI

There is no reason for Biden to "litigate" the 14th Amendment, The Coin, or any other debt strategy in advance. It doesn't even make sense to under the law, it's just asking FedSoc judges for an advisory opinion on a dispute that is unripe. Just do it, make them try to stop you.

NEWSLETTER! Biden got a lot of buzz when he said he’s been “considering the 14th amendment” but in context, he was talking about the *next* time Republicans try to extort him over the debt limit. All signs now point to ransom. mailchi.mp/crooked.com/bi

.: "We're a country that has the resources & resolve—if we want to—to handle this in an orderly _and_ a compassionate & humane way ... we shouldn't let people that just want to fear-monger & use this for political points make us think that we're not, because we are."

I wish more Democrats sounded like this on immigration.

THIS is how to do it. From : "We're a country that has the resources and resolve — if we want to — to handle this in an orderly and compassionate and humane way. The US is big enough to do that." (link via : tinyurl.com/47452h2s) As I argue here:

Dems really have to find a way to communicate that one key to a stable, orderly system is *more* legal immigration, not less, that a well managed asylum system is *possible.* Stop validating the GOP frame that the only answer to disorder is restrictions. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/

We went from “we won’t negotiate on the debt ceiling” to considering spending caps and work requirements? With a Senate majority, Dem WH, and a 5-vote GOP House majority? And public opinion? And with a president who went through this before? And options for executive action?

For all the hand-wringing about Democrats questioning the judiciary’s legitimacy… -Greg Abbott wants to pardon a murderer convicted by a Texas jury -Marco Rubio called the jury in Trump’s rape case “a joke” -Ted Cruz said Trump’s indictment makes us “a dictatorship”

Here’s the scene from the Rio Grande river, where reporters lined up by the dozens to catch glimpses of….nothing.
Quote Tweet
10 minutes before Title 42 lifts there are more journalists than migrants on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande. Hundreds of migrants are on the American side of the river who have been waiting for hours to get taken in by Border Patrol agents.

Last night, after Fox News literally counted down the hours and minutes until Title 42 ended, there was no uptick in crossings. In fact, there were more reporters at the border than migrants.

Congratulations to the Dem establishment that helped protect Henry Cuellar. Now he’s incoherently blasting Democrats on immigration, validating every absurd right-wing talking point on Fox. Also contrary to reporting, he’s not even close to an expert.

I’m not a lawyer, but what’s the argument against invoking 14th amendment on debt ceiling now? Yes, it will get litigated and raised to SCOTUS, but at least there’s ~some~ time. Boosts leverage. McCarthy saves face. Court’s legitimacy on trail again. Win-win.

This is what McCarthy & the rest of the MAGA Congress want in charge of our country.

Trump is reconsidering Michael Flynn for a senior role in his administration if he wins. For those who forgot, Flynn pledged an oath to Qanon and advised Trump to suspend the Constitution and hold a new election under martial law. rollingstone.com/politics/polit

I don’t think American democracy survives a second Trump presidency. My guess is SCOTUS (as a defender of the constitution) in a second Trump term: is ignored (if it tries to stop him) or just looks the other way and allows trump to proceed

Kind of wild how for months the state of Texas has been illegally carrying out indiscriminate extra-judicial immigration enforcement right out in the open—and the federal government is just shrugging it off.

It seems we've all long given up the pretense that Title 42 is justified on public health grounds. But a reminder that the CDC never thought Title 42 was justified by public health needs and was forced to issue the border policy anyway

Title 42 isn’t supposed to be border management—it’s a public health order that was never based on public health. It was weaponized by Trump and Biden for 3 years with help from the courts, leaving a bottleneck on our asylum system. This “surge” was predictable and preventable.

An important thread from last year about the BS narrative on Title 42—weaponized by both Trump and Biden.
Quote Tweet
The White House has defended their use of the Trump-era Title 42 policy on the basis of protecting public health. But as many have pointed out, public health experts have repeatedly spoken out against the policy—calling it inhumane, nonsensical, and politically-motivated.

News networks’ job isn’t to “make news” by being a hosting platform for an unhinged fascist riddling off unbridled lies and propaganda. It’s to seek the truth and hold powerful people accountable to it. CNN failed in that pursuit, no question about it.

Providing a massive platform for the various lies and propaganda Trump spits out isn’t the same as “making news.” “Getting answers” isn’t the job either—it’s pinning him down on those answers.
Quote Tweet
"You do not have to like the former president's answers, but you can't say that we didn't get them," Licht tells staffers, many of whom are angry about the town hall. "Kaitlan pressed him again and again and made news. Made a LOT of news." And "that is our job."

Rep. not mincing words on CNN town hall: “What we saw tonight was a series of extremely irresponsible decisions that put a sexual abuse victim at-risk, that put that person at-risk in front of a nat’l audience—and I could not have disagreed with it more. It was shameful.”

Calling for the U.S. to default Doubling down on insurrection. Mocking his own sexual assault victim. Proudly supporting ending abortion rights. Lots to work with!

This Trump town hall has been terrible for CNN, for journalism, and for democracy. But it’s been fantastic for Democratic ads.

CNN should be ashamed of themselves. They have lost total control of this “town hall” to again be manipulated into platforming election disinformation, defenses of Jan 6th, and a public attack on a sexual abuse victim. The audience is cheering him on and laughing at the host.

Wow, CNN found an entire room of ‘Republican-leaning independents’ who support pardoning insurrectionists and mocking sexual assault victims.
