For over 20 years we've been spending billions a year to find a fix for the fertilizer pollution problem -- and none of it has moved the needle. Except in one spot in Indiana. Here's how their secrets to success:

"Japan now plans to build as many as 22 new coal-burning power plants — one of the dirtiest sources of electricity — at 17 different sites in the next five years, just at a time when the world needs to slash carbon dioxide emissions to fight global warming." writes

Has humanity sinned? Is the world ending? To understand the panicky tone of much modern climate activism, this essay by sociologist Michael Barkun on our tendency to perpetuate religious apocalyptic modes, even as "secular" citizens is enlightening.

  4. If air pollution from coal and cars is bad (and the science suggests that it's terrible), feedlots near towns are also a bad idea:

  6. I liked this piece, too, which calls Goop Netflix "either the apex or the nadir of infotainment: irresistibly self-aware and personality-obsessed."

  7. AND, there are lots of people who call out deceptive snake oil profiteers and misogyny in mainstream medical culture... like I really don't see why this has to be a fight.

  9. Is there any way to get people to take the important points in this op-ed and not just be blinded by frustration with those who profit off selling nonsense?

Fine piece from the estimable about what would be, if climate change didn't exist, our worst environmental problem--the vast amounts of nitrogen we are dumping into air and water.

🛑New Paper Alert🛑Thrilled to see the first paper from my PhD accepted! Meeting the 1.5 °C climate target = coal industry must rapidly decline. But if coal is eliminated globally, what will happen to millions of coal miners who depend on this industry for jobs? 1/

Progress isn't always easy. What started as a initiative in Indiana is helping prevent fertilizer pollution in waterways, but explores the challenges behind taking it to scale.

  20. After this reporting I see there's ways for highly efficient, high production ag to keep a lot of these nutrients out of the water. It can be done!

  21. Before embarking on this I thought there was a pretty stark trade-off between fertilizer pollution and land use: That is - the more fertilizer we use, the more food, feed, and fuel we get per acre. It causes problems, but it takes pressure off rainforests
