And it seems from a semi state company which is set up by statute for profit and does not have a statutory role in mitigating climate change or biodiversity loss. Let's get the new government to change this.

New tree plantations are nowhere near as valuable as old growth forests: natural forests are full of biodiversity, store higher amounts of carbon, are more resistant to fire and pests and more resilient to the impacts of climate change. 🌳 🦅 ☀️ 🌲 🦌

Unbelievable to think that are still granting afforestation licences on Peatlands

From these findings just one fifth of the land under commercial sitka in these townlands is owned by locals. Extrapolating this county wide means that only 4% of land is planted by local residents/ local farmers. The rest is planted by investors and corporates.

'This research proves that data on forestry ownership in the UCD study commissioned by Dept Agriculture has been represented in a misleading way. It’s simply not true that 70% of Leitrim forestry owners are local residents.' Proud to be involved in this research w/

In County Cork, Leitrim, and all over Ireland a vast green plague of non-native sitka spruce plantations is spreading over the landscape. These densely planted monocultures allow no understory to grow and so are devoid of animal life.

This is Sioned Jones. This Bantry resident is up in court for causing damage to a sitka spruce plantation near her house. Over the last 14 years, she has quietly replaced the conifers with native broad leaf trees.

I’m standing with + the others campaigning for a radical change to our policy. Dark, cold, lifeless forests that acidify our soils and disrupt our communities have to end. Native, deciduous, integrated+appropriate is the way forward

Too little, too late Andrew. More greenwashing. You’ve failed in your responsibility as TD for Wicklow and as Minister for Forestry; the National Park in your area is a National Disgrace. BigForestry cheerleader, time to jog on!

Commercial forestry is one of the greatest pressures on threatened wildlife. This doesn't have to be the case. Whatever the future Government the sector needs an overhaul and planting some birch in urban parks isn't going to cut it.

Obvious rural Ireland been left behind. Rural isolation a huge problem as discussed. Failed forestry policy compounding isolation & very survival of rural communities.

"Poorer agricultural lands are unprofitable and should be used to plant trees, helping both farmers and the environment." NO what you call poor land may be High Nature Value farmland. Some of our most threatened wildlife is hanging on in these areas.

High Nature Value farmland needs to be protected from afforestation so that we dont lose Curlew, Lapwing, Hen Harrier, Great Yellow Bumblebees & species rich grasslands...the list goes on. Farmers want to farm & should be valued & supported. The next Gov must support HNV farming
