This is such a great explanation of how to use math in policy and why it's so important to move out of our equations and understand people. is one of the best mathematician-writers around today. My buddies at will all relate!

In grad school, on my first major paper, I wanted to include 2 undergraduates as coauthors. An advisor told me it was a mistake. I agreed, and coauthored the paper with 5 undergraduates instead. Sharing credit with others takes nothing away from you.

Excited to share that research on middle names and consumption with my wonderful co-authors and Frank May is now forthcoming. This research looks at the use of middle-names and how it affects the choices that a consumer will make.

I'm sorry, but I am not remotely impressed by academics working 100 hours/week. First of all, you cannot tell me that you maintain the same productivity for 100 hours as you could for 40-50. And you are setting a horrible example for junior scholars in terms of self-exploitation.

Important finding: even w/ polarization preventing adequate national action on climate, Republicans across the US are adopting solar energy at home at same rates as Dems. Reminder that everyone has a stake in this fight. Coalitions can be built that reflect this.

More info here for anyone who wants to learn about how teaching evaluations have documented race, gender, sexual orientation, and accent bias. (Moreover, they aren’t even correlated with learning outcomes!😱)

General ideas I wish would die forever: 1/ - That you need to be some genius to be in science. - That if you're in scicomm, you're not serious about science. - That everyone in science is in it for accolades. - That there's this 1 mold for what a scientist is/looks like.

An urn contains 10K red & blue marbles of unknown proportion. Win $1M if you estimate the correct proportion. You can either: (1) sample 80%, or, (2) stir the marbles & sample 1%. Which do you do? Meng shows it is better to stir! Big Data is biased.
