Youtube just want to differentiate endorsement and verification, this is their solution. As long as the youtube audience is educated properly and it is forced down the throat of the consumer that the gray box is the new standard, no issues will come from it.
People who deserve and require verification should have it, if they don't get it then that is a fault on youtube's part. Removing the tick won't be a problem at all. This is pretty much as simple as I can put it.
That's fair enough, as I said the main issue isn't the design language, it's removing the verification from thousands of already established channels. It's just that for many unaware the change in UI might not be obvious or may be confusing.
