Hospitals are looking at combined orders for respiratory virus panels + SARS-CoV-2 tests to make the process more fluid, but ultimately the increase in ill pts seeking care will only stress the demand for testing. We absolutely have to get this fixed *now*.

I've remained hopeful that mask wearing will help attenuate the number of flu cases this year, but...

Agreed- so far the Southern Hemisphere activity is low (yay!) but I worry that with COVID, the heightened awareness will trigger a lot of additional testing. It is challenging bc testing is critical, but without a strong foundation, delayed testing does little to help anyone.

Don’t mitigations like masks and social distancing make a big dent in flu? I don’t understand why R0=1.3 (flu) would outcompete.
-
It will also be interesting to see if the mitigation we've been practicing will suppress the flu and colds this fall.

SARSCoV2, how much seasonality? ”Influenza outbreaks are globally ubiquitous and epidemics move smoothly to and fro across the surface of the earth almost every year in a sinuous curve that runs parallel with the ‘midsummer’ curve of vertical solar radiation.” Hope-Simpson, 1981

I was soooo sick in January. Had a horrific cough for weeks. We really don’t need another terrible flu season especially if people have recovered from COVID and then get the flu
