What is the *most important* element when determining whether someone is or isn’t part of the “elite”? Put another way (although arguably none are) which gets closest to being a requirement to join the class?

All the below would struggle to be seen as 'elite': -an impoverished but highly educated person -an impoverished famous person -an impoverished person with great family connections Now, give any of those people great wealth and the 'elite' tag starts to sound right.

I really like this way of setting it up. The vote Haider had is interesting but it does seem most compelling when its thought of as a requisite combination of factors. Influence + wealth. Also seems like some derision for those not in their status is necessary.

Trump is wealthy and famous but despised by the elites with better educational credentials, self presentation, and loyalty to other elite causes (eg, globalism). Many wealthy athletes are like Trump in this way.
