I’m changing my Twitter habits in the hopes of fostering something better. New Rules: 1. No snark ever. No liking/rting “dunks” (no matter how valid). 2. Aim for high ratio of sharing good work to criticizing bad work. 3. When criticizing, provide solutions or alternative.

I've tried this with mixed success. Like, I think I'm better than I was, but not as good as I could be. I still get really set off by hypocritical moralizing.

And of course Jeet Heer does good work and writes useful stuff, which only makes it more frustrating.

Please keep trying. It may take some time to unlearn a habit that is ingrained in us, but I think it is possible and I think the efforts to mitigate these behaviours isn't in vain. When people we like are attacked, I think we just need to correct what's false.

Civility is so important. I try my absolute hardest to practice civility even when people aren’t civil to me. This tweet is encouraging to see. :)

Sometimes I find just typing out my snarky or angry tweet/post helps me, and I can delete it w/o sending. It's like writing a note and burning it. Cathartic. I don't do it enough though.
