Is this perhaps part of a different, non-religious issue? My knowledge of Pakistan would fit on a postage stamp, but this seems an outsize reaction to whatever insult one person could make. Is there an underlying economic/political cause at play here?

This is not surprising for Pakistan. Here is a similar incident from a few years ago, with tens of thousands in attendance:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-35693767 …

The insanity of this....

I have to revisit this and say a little more...this is gut wrenching. Men. Just...men...thousands of them raging about WORDS and willing to murder a woman, an innocent, beautiful woman. All in the name of defending words written by other men in the name of an invisible thing! WTF

They are definitely savages. As are the women who brought the accusation forward and started the ball rolling

I haven’t even given thought to how it all started, although that doesn’t surprise me. These guys don’t look to concerned with due process anyway. Times like these I wonder how we’d explain this to a group of aliens.

“The charge is punishable by death under legislation that rights groups say is routinely abused to settle personal vendettas.” As if executing people for blasphemy would be fine if the law was just better designed.

Absolutely shameful. At least, it should be shameful! And it's worrying how many hot headed, death worshipers feel comfortable enough to be doing this.

And the culture derived from the Enlightenment is not superior to cultures based on religion? Right.
