Calling the bison slaughter "for sport" was the polite euphemism Americans used for it. In reality US forces were burning Seneca, Miami, etc towns' crops since at least the Revolutionary War. It was just wrecking the food supply to fuck with people, is what it was.https://twitter.com/bebeembop/status/1273404690873622528 …

I was thinking about the loss of the bison a little while ago. What a waste- just shooting them for sport. Crazy.

You could call genocide a sport I guess based on USian enthusiasm for it.

my hot take is that the american way of war has been entirely shaped by indian genocide. total war wasn't pioneered in europe, it wasn't pioneered in georgia, it was pioneered by the destruction of indigenous ecosystems. and we've pursued all our major wars on that model.

instead of destroying the enemy on the battlefield, you destroy the ecosystems (frequently literally) that supply the enemy. what else was the firebombing of cities but the logic of the indian wars applied to white people?

There's a quest in Red Dead Redemption 2 where you encounter hunters explicitly doing this, and you get to kill them. I love these politics in my video games.

Yes, the attacks on food supplies and cultural symbols (particularly corn and bison) were intentional and predictably disastrous. A modern day example is the destruction of olive groves. The harm occurs on many levels.

I should, of course, include pinion and the BLM's endless, ongoing attacks on that essential foraging crop. Creating grazing space for ecologically harmful cattle ranching at the cost of cultural continuity and greater food security for NDN people.
