Original Article: People who use alternative therapies are more likely to refuse conventional treatments. As a result, they have lower survival rates. (N = 1,901,815) Note that the researchers controlled for cancer type, clinical stage, comorbidities, etc.

Why do some countries drive on the left and others on the right? This rather long article is totally worth your time! So much interesting trivia. Bevor Hitler annexed Austria some provinces drove on the left. I didn't know that... Link:

Revenge is for communication: When people were able to explain *why* they punished a transgressor, they punished less severely.

Here’s a robust psychological effect that does not wilt under replication scrutiny. Kurt Lewin noticed it in the 1930s: making public commitments “freezes” attitudes in place. So saying something dumb makes you a bit dumber. It becomes harder to correct yourself. Tweeters beware.

Natural selection builds mechanisms that human engineers still struggle to match. Exhibit A: The neural structures underpinning head stabilization in this hawk. (Head stabilization has the same function as image stabilization in cameras: to maintain a steady view despite motion.)

    (7) My observations fit with Moral Foundations Theory, by et al., that some people feel highly loyal to an ingroup, such as their country, while for others this is hard to comprehend. The theory was replicated recently across many countries.

In network effects like this, very often, the most important person is the *second* person to join the cascade.

A great way to realise the sheer quantity of information our 🧠 seamlessly processes when we do a “simple” task like driving a car. This is what the Tesla autopilot sees using a neural network which took 70,000 GPU hours to train. ht

Glass replaced gold and silver for drinking cups as luxury tableware. Unlike metal, glass did not alter the taste of what was within it. One-handled drinking cup (modiolus), 1st C AD. They once touched Roman lips. Vessels of this shape are known in silver.
