This week in 's Discreet log I cover the work creating Rust bindings for libCwtch, and demure into how please I am to see Rust doing some work to bring metaprogramming back into the mainstream with good macro support! The old Lisp programmer in me is very pleased 💜🦀

How long do we think it will be until applications sold in the US will be required to send a report to the IRS anytime anyone opens or imports a picture depicting more than $600?

The context of all this is that I'm building a SID monitoring station as part of my ever growing radio astronomy hobby and as part of that I've been gathering quite a bit of data to hunt down interference and this signal keeps showing up, so I'm curious.

It is between 22k and 23k (seems to be centred just off 22.5), each horizontal pixel is ~20hz.

Question for anyone who has ever done any VLF signals stuff: Any idea what this might be? I'm willing to mark it as some weird local interference, but given that it's periodic and has a specific shape I'm interested to know if it is anything else. (1 vertical pixel ~= 1 minute)

Anyway, very ready for a new generation of reimagined browsers. A louder echo of the early 00's niche browser renaissance.

I feel the same way about my browser showing me ads as I do about my ISP blocking websites, or my phone manufacturer scanning my media files for contraband - it's an abuse of position, a violation of layer norms, and shouldn't be tolerated.

Even the proposition of displaying ads directly in the address bar is enough of a proverbial straw to demolish any hope I have of a redemption arc.

Really appreciate that Mozilla has chosen the death by a thousand cuts approach to killing Firefox. This way you really get to *feel* the pain of realizing how bad the browser ecosystem is over and over and over again.

Incredibly proud of how this release came together. File sharing went from design to implementation across 4-different platforms in a single month. And I think it speaks to how far our little non-profit team has come. Please consider supporting us:

For the first time, the Mac Cwtch 1.3 build was moved off the virtual server via Cwtch itself! Cwtch is now starting to be used to deploy Cwtch! In the future I am strongly thinking about an Update Bot that can tell you of new versions and just send them to you!

Aside from inline images and audio overlays - file sharing opens up some higher level protocol options for us (e.g. larger messages, group-hosted messages, content-addressable messages) which I am excited to start experimenting with.

We are being deliberate about file sharing. As critical a feature as it is there are also many risks in a metadata resistant setting. For now you will have to explicitly opt-in to enabling file sharing, and Cwtch will not attempt to open any received files.
