Font from the Parish Church of St. Ebba in Ebchester, County Durham. Ebchester overlies the Roman fort of Vindomora and the font is thought to be carved from part of a Roman pillar.

Sogdian immigrants in China respected dogs (left: 6th-c sarcophagus). In Zoroastrianism, the gaze of dogs upon corpses wards off evils and ensures the dead souls' passage across the bridge of judgement en route to paradise. Best the dog has four eyes, a sign of supernatural power

OK, now things are getting dire. Twitter has affected/infected my reading comprehension. I read this headline as "systems raises 11m tiny LION engines." Now I want to see what a tiny lion engine looks like.

Goldfinches seem to have been plucky as well as sacred in their associations. Here a small but determined "charm" hold their own with a rather grumpy elephant.

Breton Gospelbooks sometimes have...eclectic... illuminations. But one really interesting one is Angers, BM MS 24 (20), f. 7v, in which the head of Adam is buried under the cross from which a snake emerges, yet is subdued by Christ's blood trickling down the Cross.
