Over the past few days, my son Alek has asked me many questions. "Mom, did you see the man who was killed by the police?" "Why did this happen?" "Why is third-degree murder the charge?" The truth, I tell him, is that we have allowed systemic racism to continue in our country.

There needs to be zero tolerance for discrimination and profiling, and for the killing of unarmed Black people. Full stop.

Beyond that, we need to be willing to have difficult conversations about institutional racism and fight for real change in our education policy, our health care policy, and in our criminal justice system.
