Does anybody know a good piece that describes the phenomenology of depression, i. e. what it's like to be depressive, to people who have never suffered from depression? I know several people who are clinically depressed and I'd like to get a sense of what it's like.

I don't think I have ever been really sad for more than a few hours, so depression is something that feels completely alien to me, plus I suspect that it's not quite the same thing as just being sad for a person who isn't depressive except all the time, but I feel like it's

It is actually easy. Think about those terrible 5 minutes you felt after a very bad outcome in your life. That emptiness, the void of meaning in life, the despair. That's going on most of the time for depressed people.
