I’ve also been perplexed by this. I’d venture that the Bay Area has the largest collection of desirable male partners of pretty much any city in the world (‘desirable’ = smart, hard-working, make enough $ to support a family). So there’s some kind of matching problem going on.

E.g. the majority of women in the Bay Area want careers more than they want kids (self-selection) and a lot of the men figure they’ll do it later bc they can...potentially in a city where cost of living is less horrifying. My impression is that few people stay in SF permanently

People don’t move to the Bay Area to find life partners. People there could be—and probably are!—interacting with potential life partners (smart, successful, kind individuals of the opposite sex) all the time, every day w/o even noticing bc that’s not what they’re looking for.
