Teach a man formal logic, & he'll forget it in hours. Teach a man the informal fallacies, & he'll scream "AD HOMINEM" at everyone to the end of days.

Finally, we argue that questions about 'dominance' are historically misleading to begin with. Using the results of our bibliometric analyses, we argue that questions about the development of American psychology deserve more fine-grained answers. (4/4)

On the other hand, our co-citation analyses also indicate that the influence of behaviorism did not dramatically decline after the Second World War either (at least up until 1970; image: most-cited authors 1961-1970) (3/4)

In short, we argue that the standard story about the development of American psychology needs reappraising. On the one hand, our analyses indicate that behaviorism was never as dominant as is typically argued (image: most-cited authors 1931-1940) (2/4)

The Rise and Fall of Behaviorism: The Narrative and the Numbers. Preprint now online! In the paper, we use bibliometric methods to analyze 119.278 American psychology papers (1920-1970) to quantitatively test the received view about the development of American psychology (1/4)

Before you welcome analytic philosophy into your life think back to that drummer friend in high school who wouldn't stop bippity-bapping on everything and ask yourself if you want that but with first-order logic

"Both dogmas, I shall argue, are ill-founded. One effect of abandoning them is, as we shall see, a blurring of the supposed boundary between philosophy and history of philosophy." Just out in BJHP: Beaney's "Two Dogmas of Analytic Historiography". Sounds exciting!

For here's Susan Stebbing characterizing logic in her 1930 "A Modern Introduction to Logic." (Michael Beaney says it "might justly be regarded as the first textbook of analytic philosophy.")

"Logic, in the most usual and widest sense of the word, is concerned with reflective thinking."

We shouldn't try to diversify the canon, we should get rid of canons altogether. Not every philosophy student has to read Plato. , interviewed this week by the Dutch paper Trouw after his talk at our 'Beyond the Canon' course ()
