    EU Negotiating mandate - a view from Brussels. Its been a couple of days since the EU set out its mandate. The first thing to note is that the EU is moving at its own pace, the PMs insistence on a deal by 31/12 not withstanding, the EU is not moving fast. 1/

    The Irish leaders’ debate is really quite shocking. The three leaders have a detailed grasp of complex welfare and tax issues, they are polite and courteous, they admit mistakes, they say sorry. They might even be largely honest. Why is all that possible in Ireland but not here?

    I'm starting to hear rumours of a possible National Strike if the UK does not end up with a close to the EU deal. That should be interesting. 16-million or so vital UK people on strike. That would send Johnson a clear message. Could be an interesting retweet.

    In 2016, & I published a comparison of trade policy around the world -- A FREE pre-pub version is here: See table 1 on p. 89 -- EU has one of the most open trading systems in the world.

    Hearing a lot of reactions like this. It is based on the assumption that the EU is itself a beacon of free trade. Reality is the Customs Union has very high tariff walls and the regulation is rapidly becoming less not more competitive.

    Today's annoucements of UK's and EU's negotiation aims have proved all those right who insisted that the withdrawal agreement needed a 'backstop' to ensure an open border betw NI and Ireland. If anything, it is now clear that there will be a hard border between the EU and the UK

    Two addenda 1) Johnson - just like May - setting hard red lines for domestic political consumption which could strangle negotiations and 2) how glad are we now that we didn't 'trust' the UK the deliver on a close, friction-free deal and sort out the border as part of these talks!

    The European Chemical Agency which runs the worlds top chemical regulatory body (REACH) has now confirmed no Brits will be employed there post Brexit. UK business must still abide by it but will have no say or power & no staff. Power is literally dripping away from the UK now.
