    Marketing for small businesses is not about jumping straight into tactics. There is a sad belief that marketing properly is only possible for larger businesses, with huge budgets and departments but nothing could be further from the truth.

    We don't have to be great with numbers. We just need to talk to the people who are. Marketers need to learn from finance, working with them not for them is the way forward.

    All the tools in the world won't make a better blacksmith. Nor do they make better marketing or creative. It's always how they are used, never what is used. And sometimes what appear to be mistakes actually make make something better.

    A word on segmentation after talking with a potential client. If your resources are limited, you need it to focus efforts. That's strategic thinking. It's not a process for process sake, nothing in marketing or business should be.

    The main reason for jargon and nonsense speak in business comms is because so many are absolutely woeful at figuring out what their customers want and how they communicate. The tragedy is that it's not even that hard to do.

    We are the sum of our experiences, if we read, we take and learn from other's experiences without having to make their mistakes or worse, being unaware of them. Either way, ignorance is not a good look.

    Absolutely loving 's new book. It's a great reminder that taking a perceived* risk is often the safer bet. It's encouraging for me as a marketer who's often doubting himself at every turn. *and it usually is, it's rarely grounded and usually routed in norms.

    Of course advertising works. Not always, but lots. In fact, in a recent study of how auto makers' product portfolios affect sales, researchers found that the thing with the highest correlation with sales over 7 yrs & 40 brands was ... ADVERTISING.

    This to me SCREAMS Digital Marketers promoted up the ladder with no training, no breadth. Just experts at using tools, nothing else. Maybe I'm being harsh but it's like reading "73% of accountants believe money is actually measured by rolling dice".
