In our social environment today: Legible markers like college degrees, work history, criminal record, credit rating - make it difficult for people to reinvent themselves. This likely limits human capital growth on the talented side of the distribution.

It forces talented people into pointless games like biography rewriting or joining prestige vehicles and self-promotion. It also allows universities and other minters of prestige to collect rent.

On the other hand, this very visible tracking doesn't actually take into account intangible social betrayals and breaches of trust. So while it is very rigid as a class system, it isn't useful for social fabric people can use.

The Paradox of our System: We are highly mobile with regards to people. We are highly immobile with regards to institutions. We know how to defect on individuals but not institutions.

This social reality is what produces pervasive mistrust and is the foundation chipping away at formerly high trust societies. It is also what makes us all worse and worse at evaluating people.
