In our social environment today: Legible markers like college degrees, work history, criminal record, credit rating - make it difficult for people to reinvent themselves. This likely limits human capital growth on the talented side of the distribution.

The Paradox of our System: We are highly mobile with regards to people. We are highly immobile with regards to institutions. We know how to defect on individuals but not institutions.

This social reality is what produces pervasive mistrust and is the foundation chipping away at formerly high trust societies. It is also what makes us all worse and worse at evaluating people.
