I was curious about that when the Nobel was awarded, but apparently artemisinin was the only discovery of importance ever made by her or that program as a whole, so it's not clear that it was an effective method, given that all of those folk remedies supposedly work already...

'bioprospecting' and 'traditional medicine' have centuries-long track record of catching being ultra hyped and then not delivering much. It's the usual Hayekian conceit: 'all these wildly biased and random traditions *actually* contain super-sekret wisdom!'
