The second vital point is one that Kissinger himself pointed to. He bemoaned what Nixon could have been "had someone in the establishment loved him". The contrast with the well networked Kissinger is important.

This point is exaggerated however. Nixon was well networked within the Republican party, if he wasn't he would not have been able to unseat its establishment, the same establishment that didn't initially want him.
