Hobsbawm, if I recall correctly, reckoned a “short 20th century” from WWI to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. So we would now be nearly thirty years into the long 21st century.

Very natural to equate the 20th century with either the USSR or US! Should American hegemony end before the 2030s, I suspect the consensus will be track America's rise and fall. Otherwise the Soviet Union.

1945 marks the founding of the US centered liberal world order that'd eventually bring down communism. This same order is basically falling apart at an exponential rate now.

It ended in 2007. In 2008 we had the iPhone + Facebook + Twitter + Obama + Financial crisis + Beijing Olympics + Russian war in Georgia. All these things belong more in the 21st century than the 20th.
