I'm consistently struck by how massive the British Empire was, but it was a comparative welterweight in WWII. The USSR, USA, and even Germany had higher populations they could draft into battle or work in factories. That was more critical for hard power by that point in time.

The British Empire never really drew all that much from their "Third World" colonies for manpower in war. They had easy access to resources but really not all that many people terribly loyal to the crown.
