Assuming security, trying out new activities and tactics seemes clearly the right choice for unlocking more from life.
I imagine there are some who view security as externally provided that do take risks. An example would be children, who perhaps emotionally and even intellectually assume security is provided by parents.

Using psychology's favorite "Unconditional Love": Children who have parent UL explore. children who don't, don't. People who have company/family/etc, UL explore, those who don't, don't. They can also explore if they don't give a shit. That would be internal UL / "self-esteem".
