It's been briefed repeatedly before (and other countries too like Ghana and Albania who rubbished the stories). But this seems to be a formal announcement. And Rwanda have previously signed a deal to do this with Denmark.

That bleeding heart liberal David Davis tried to amend the Nationality and Borders Bill to stop the Govt offshoring due it being v expensive, not stopping dangerous journeys, +, in the case of Australia, the only country to do it at scale, numerous physical/sexual abuse scandals

Here's more info on the disastrous Australian offshoring programme. https://www.ein.org.uk/news/academic-report-finds-australian-model-offshore-processing-asylum-seekers-which-uk-proposes …

What the fuck happens if they're seeking asylum from Rwanda?! This is so sick.

My hope here is that the deal is largely a stunt and a combo of the civil service and the courts render it moot. But that this is the Govt's idea of a good stunt just shows what a bunch of moral degenerates they are.

Do read
@ZoeJardiniere's thread on this too. It is an utterly toxic policy.https://twitter.com/ZoeJardiniere/status/1514490440040554502?t=6hrLre-QcvDuiJwCbsoUcA&s=19 …

Had lots of replies saying it's a "dead cat" to distract from the parties and/or a vote winner. On the first they've been trying to do this for years + pushing a bill through to allow it so I sadly don't think it's mere distraction (though that doesn't mean it will happen).

As to whether the announcement would be popular. I haven't seen polling but I wouldn't assume it would be. There's definitely an audience for it + it might be a majority. But attitudes have changed on asylum + refugees in recent years.

OK here's some polling when the idea was suggested with Ascension Island. Slight plurality support but not significant.https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1311334834904748032?t=FYLVO4qbEhg4WWduZgUipw&s=19 …

And majority opposed to the idea in abstract in another YouGov poll (via
@PME_Politics). It's certainly not a wildly popular idea.pic.twitter.com/41dlg04D5j

Seems likely that the aid budget is being used to subsidise the Rwanda offshoring policy just in case it wasn't already objectionable enough.https://twitter.com/willrworley/status/1514515296983388160?t=J5yFCiT5ycyjRaDf75hq4g&s=19 …

There we go doesn't even have plurality support. And the Q underplays the severity of the policy as it implies successful applicants would be allowed back to the UK.https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1514590971354308610?t=z0UwjA7xNcg-7xBrH8vzRw&s=19 …

Just an unbelievably bad policy even if you don't have a fundamental ethical problem with the idea. It will *help* smuggling gangs by giving them a new market.https://twitter.com/cjayanetti/status/1514597015895773184?t=Yw2vYkiYgTc7OjocJ3EAHw&s=19 …

Sorry I know I'm doing a lot of tweets about this but God it's such a bad policy on every level.
