  3. My schedule for tomorrow at FOSDEM is looking absolutely CRAZY. Which, as I gather is standard. 😬

  7. I don't see a FOSDEM post on the forums, maybe thats a reason to finally sign up to the D forums.

CRTs are, sadly, a dying breed. The last one sold in the UK was in 2006. But there are whispers of a CRT revival. No doubt due to its unparalleled latency times - they're lightning fast! In the meantime, you can check out some of our lovingly looked after CRTs at the NVM. ❤️🎮

"Why don't my old games look as good as I remember?!" Don't worry, it's not nostalgia playing tricks on you. Retro games genuinely don't look as good as they used to. And it's due to the HD screens we're now playing them on. 📺 A THREAD ABOUT CRT TELEVISIONS 📺

  11. Thats it. I hope that was interesting to a niche audience of photographers who might take photos of CRTs. I am always up for ( paid ) gigs photographing indoor/outdoor events, museums, people, that kinda thing. 📷

  12. Adjusting settings to perfectly capture a CRT's screen, expose for it's brightness AND expose the rest of the shot is quite challenging, but entirely possible. Shooting CRTs indoors in fairly moody, artificially lit environments yields best results.

  13. I find that 1/60th of a second is the minimum shutter speed for capturing people. Any lower, and their natural movement makes them blurry. You're right at the limit of getting sharp photos of people there. But luckily, people playing games intently tend to sit fairly still!

  14. The latter ruins an image in which the CRT is a primary focus point, as it is in all photos in the NVM's thread. We want the viewer to be able to see the TV screen, as well as the humans in the photo!

  15. Having set your shutter speed, you should adjust your other parameters to account for exposing a display ( which emits light ) properly. Its VERY easy to end up with a blown out, entirely white screen, or a screen that appears strangely dim.

  16. There is also some variation in scan frequencies of CRTs, so try 1/70th, or even 1/80th if you might have a 70, or 80Hz TV. But honestly, stick to 1/60th as a general rule.

  17. If you use a shutter speed divisible by 30, obviously, you'll stand a chance of capturing exactly half a frame. But this can be useful to know if you're really struggling to get something.

  18. Now, I did say 'divisible by 60' but, if you select a shutter speed faster than 1/60th of a second, you might capture multiple frames on screen in one photo. Resulting in a more blurry image, the faster your shutter speed. These images can be acceptable, up to a point.

  19. ✨ But the best way is to set your camera to use a shutter speed divisible by 60. i.e 1/60th of a second. Then, when your camera takes the photo, you're essentially guaranteed to capture one full redraw of the screen. Your camera captures the whole scan, from top to bottom. ✨

  20. So, to get a photo of a CRT where you can actually see whats on the CRT, you need to capture the image after a full draw of the screen. Of course, you could take many photos and there is a reasonable chance one of them will show a full picture, but theres a better way.

  21. Now, this isnt visible to the human eye, persistence of vision takes care of that for us. But with a camera, if you get a shot half way through a scan, then half the screen will appear black, because the old picture has faded and the new one hasnt been drawn yet.
