Now that the Supreme Court has run away from partisan gerrymandering, it’s time to fight on a state-by-state basis. Here’s a long list of actions for individual states. I’ll add to it as more ideas come up. First, the categories of actions you can take:

Some bills are more assertive in making sure Virginians get a fair shake. Several require public hearings (HB1256 calls for 13 hearings!!) and public data release to help citizens evaluate plans and draft their own. These provisions would be a great part of a reform package.

The amendment itself was not very detailed, which is how it passed in 2019. The General Assembly can now do better by passing enabling legislation. That is a complicated business. See our one-page cheat sheet of the many bills before the G.A. this week:

This week, the Virginia General Assembly is working on redistricting reform! They have to pass a constitutional amendment for the November ballot. They also have to pass enabling legislation to ensure fairness. Learn more in 's new report:

  12. Such a strategy certainly plays to the political press's high ratio of personality-based to issue-based stories. Shallow, but likely to get amplified.

It is vital we vote in 2020 like our whole damn planet depends on it. Because truly, it does. We cannot bunt on this, cannot pretend it isn't happening, that it isn't real. We may not be able to stop it but we can do triage -- so commit to the path. Help save the world.

In 2021, if New Jersey's redistricting commission deadlocks what happens next? At we think whoever breaks the tie will need support. A look by :

  18. Anyway, Virginians, contact your Delegates and state Senators! Let them know how you feel about . They started the job in 2019, and they can finish it in 2020. A lot is happening this week - give them the encouragement they need.

  19. Lots of bills in front of the Virginia General Assembly this week, as they consider redistricting reform. Here's a one-pager, for your easy reference. The more orange checkmarks, the better:

  21. tl;dr of cheat sheet: the more orange checkmarks, the better. Most bills have essentials such as respecting communities of interest and preventing undue favor to any political party. Combined with the amendment & the commission, those provisions will protect Virginia voters best.
