I'm excited to announce that I've rebuilt SEO Toolbelt!
The old site served me well, but I wanted to address some of the drawbacks in the original build and give it a fresh new look.
Here's a thread of some of my favourite new things ๐งต

Ecom stores: Don't ignore category gap analysis.
My client had 150k+ products with very few categories.
Here's how I helped:
- Planned 600+ categories
- Organised them into a hierarchy
- Many new internal linking components
- Reworked main nav
The result? Continuous growth.

Dark mode! I'm a big fan of dark mode, so I went all out on the implementation. Choose between light, dark, and system theme, or press T to toggle between modes quickly.

Checklists! I've built a section of the site dedicated to them. We only have two (URL structure + website migration), but I have more in the pipeline.
Your checklist progress is saved in your browser to make it easy to return to at a later date.

Competitor analysis for SEO is handy, but "doing something because everyone else is doing it" isn't always a good thing.

You can't learn everything.
You can't do everything.
You can't be everything.

Long-tail categories are key for capturing the lower-volume, more specific search queries that most businesses/clients want to rank for.
Don't underestimate their importance!

Good SEOs understand people.
They understand how people search, what they want, the experience they like, and how search engines interpret that.

Don't change navigation solely for SEO - prioritise usability and make it easier for users to find what they're looking for.

SEO takes patience and consistency.
I had a client earlier in 2022 ask me if the strategy was working after four months.

The value of long-tail keywords can't be overstated.
It's an age-old tactic at this point, but it still consistently works every time.
It's easier to rank for the long tail, and you can match specific user needs that match precisely match your service.

SEO is a collaborative game.
- Content writers
- Developers
- Brand managers
- Project managers
- C-suite (especially CMOs)
You'll need great people in each role to achieve greatness.

Measure the right metric. If you want revenue and leads, work back from there to figure out the secondary ones that matter.

Don't rely solely on Google. Diversify your traffic sources.
Google doesn't always get algo updates right. Great sites get demoted, and you'll need to wait for reversals.

If you ignore technical SEO, it's like driving with the handbrake on.
No amount of links and content can make up for poor tech.

User first SEO:
Optimize content, design, and UX for humans, and the search engine results will follow.

The mistake I repeatedly see brands make is prioritising content volume over quality.
Find the person who creates remarkable pieces 2x a month, rather than average pieces 20x a month.

Expertise is not just about having the answers. It's also about knowing how to find them.

"An audit to fix your technical SEO" might sell okay.
"An audit that results in an average 40% uplift when actioned" will sell better.
Use tangible outcomes when selling.

80% of success is showing up.
For SEO, that means constantly updating and optimising.
If you don't show up for your website, neither will your audience.

The competition for great content on the internet is fierce, invest in greatness or don't invest at all.

SEOs sell marketing disguised as optimisation.

Not all users are ready to buy, but a strong content strategy ensures your brand is top of mind when they are.

Stay humble and surround yourself with experts.
Seek out the people who know more than you do and learn.
Don't be a know-it-all, be a learn-it-all.

SEO is not a free ride, you'll either pay with your wallet or your time.

When competing for a keyword, ask yourself:
- How can I be more helpful?
- What content format could work?
- How can I make this more engaging?
Be different, or be better.
If you can't do either, pick another keyword.

If you want to succeed, work with people who are better and more experienced than you.
You can learn from them, challenge yourself, and be motivated by their progress.
