Last year, California prisons handed over roughly 1,400 people to ICE for deportation. CA purports to be a “sanctuary” for immigrants, but the state government itself is one of the main drivers of deportation. In 2018-19, local jails sent more than 3,700 people to ICE.
California has no legal obligation to collaborate with ICE, and the transfers are voluntary. But @GavinNewsom has supported the practice, which has led thousands to be indefinitely torn from their families, after they’ve already completed lengthy prison sentences.
Some families aren’t even told the transfers will be happening. On the day of Kao Saelee’s scheduled release last August after 22 yrs in prison, his sister was waiting outside to take him home. Boun was freed from ICE last month, but the deportation threat looms. He spoke in support of the #VISIONAct today and asked @GavinNewsom for a pardon, which would protect him from ICE.

CDCR could immediately end its coordination with ICE, but despite national outrage over the transfers of Kao Saelee + Boun Keola (both refugee firefighters, imprisoned as teens, threatened with deportation to Laos, which they fled as kids), @GavinNewsom has refused to back down.
That’s why @AsmCarrillo introduced the new #VISIONAct bill to #StopICEtransfers. The legislation is backed by @Ash_Kalra @SenGonzalez_33 @Scott_Wiener @SantiagoAD53 and groups like @aaaj_alc which have been pushing to stop these deportations for years.
We also don’t know the full scope of the damage. We know 1,400 were transferred from prison to ICE last year, but @angelafchan noted that CDCR hasn’t tracked or shared info on how many were deported, how many may have gotten Covid in ICE, or how many had Covid when transferred..
