At NYCC, we got into a discussion about a writer’s “voice,” that individualistic, undefinable quality of an author’s writing. It’s impossible to teach, but every author I’ve read with a powerful voice had this in common: they leaned into what they loved with reckless abandon.

Hell, I sure did it. The thought of being judged as a “D&D writer” terrified me, made me want to inject unnecessary seriousness into my work. Then I found out that people who would judge me for that were always going to, so they didn’t matter and I started writing elfbutts.

And once I started leaning into what I loved and writing what I wanted to? The voice came. The audience followed. And both of those are great, but you know the best part? No more fear of being judged or feeling like a fraud that could be exposed. Love is liberating.
