It's such a shame that children (and adults) are lacking in even the most basic knowledge of the natural world. So here's a thread of how objects from the natural world could be used in class. One a day (until I get bored). Feel free to add your own!

Forget curriculum reviews and OFSTED framework changes... If this works, it could alter primary teaching as we know it and end the great glue war for good!

Can children get excited about the world around them if they have no knowledge of it? We need more Skyes!

Well at least someone’s excited the lambing shed is ready... just a few weeks to go now! Teachers arrange your lambing visits now. ⁦⁩ can find you great farm links and organise the visit through our Open Farm School Days programme if you wish

Can anyone point me in the direction of good blogs about strategies for checking understanding during input?

    18) Bird ID and data handling Setting up a well provisioned bird feeding station offers many data handling opportunities. Simply count visitors or calculate average feed time. The blue tit, one of the most frequent visitors to bird feeders, weighs a tiny 10g!

The best thing about taking reception class to do the was their infectious enthusiasm for counting, recording and noting the natural world with or without binoculars!

    17) Worms, volume and measure Build a wormery. By asking children to accurately measure the volume of sand/soil in each level they apply important maths skill. There are 27 species of earth worm in the UK and they are vital to maintain soil health.

I've always enjoyed teaching art, but for me an afternoon with 30 and no support was always absolutely exhausting. Very different with just 2!

Does anyone know of a book of short stories set during a specific historic period or based around a central historic event. The kind of thing that gives several different perspectives?

It’s often intuitively believed that nature is good for children, and that being away from the restrictions of the classroom environment enables them to learn more effectively.

Another great opportunity for primary schools in the NE to win a class visit to a wonderful dairy. These visits were amazing last year. Get involved!

A wonderful thread with lovely pictures. Perfect if you're preparing to do . Number 8. The dunnock is my favourite. Lovely little bird that everyone sees, but no one ever notices and many can't name!
