I just can't get behind Sommers' "Anti-Leviathan" idea. He speaks of the costs that we pay (which weren't really adequately explained) by not fighting our own battles, but do we really want a free-for-all tilt towards vigilantism?

I thought one of the main points behind our legal system was to remove emotion from grievances as much as possible. This seems like it would have the opposite effect.

Exactly! I found his arguments very unconvincing. Honor might be good if the norms are updated continously. But thats the thing with honor cultures, the norms are often conservative and hard to update to keep up with moral progress.

Love it how Tamler seems so well behaved when he goes on Sam’s podcast compared to VBW. And by ‘well behaved’ I mean ‘less drunk’.

"Now that's a fucked up....are you allowed to swear on this podcast?" "Yes indeed you are"

In your bully example, you say (paraphrased) "If anyone deserves to suffer, it's this guy." The problem is, no one "deserves" to suffer imo. There are either sufficient consequential reasons to make him suffer or there aren't and the degree to which he suffers matters too.

This point should be obvious to Sam and it's strange that it doesn't seem to be.
-
I haven't finished it yet. Kind of responding to it live.
-
I haven't finished it either I just swear I've heard Sam say people "deserve" things before and that never really made sense to me considering his views on free will.
-
If he's just making an argument that it 'feels' like they deserve it, I think it's fine but, yeah, it should be remembered that just deserts doesn't really make sense except in intuitive terms imo.

Honor & shame was the reason my sons (an atheist) now wife (who knew) was told by her parents, despite living an outwardly secular life in Oz, she must marry a Muslim man. So my son pledged allegiance to a god he doesn’t believe. Honour culture involves control &/or violence.
