Riddle for the 21st century: How can we turn teaching into a high-prestige and highly competitive profession.https://twitter.com/AdamMGrant/status/992026488743579648 …

Teachers are massively underpaid. In the past 6 years, their real pay has fallen in 39 of 50 states. To educate the next generation, we need to attract, motivate, and retain passionate, skilled teachers. And that won’t happen if we don’t improve pay. https://www.axios.com/oklahoma-teachers-brace-themselves-6c21da6f-06ef-474c-a2e8-ca84e7d53828.html … pic.twitter.com/5qT9HACf9U

@AdamMGrant pull 20 billion out of the defence budget and reinvest in teaching wages. A resurgence will most likely occur.

Look at spend-per-pupil vs test scores over time. I'm not sure more money will do what you think it will. (Teacher's spouse.)

Not entirely true. The real tragedy is the stagnant salaries will not attract the next generation of teachers.

Some factor is driving up the cost of education *at all levels* w/o noticeably improving the result. There's a "fiscal leak" in the systems. Let's identify why education costs have increased *at a rate greater than inflation* before trying to fix things with more money.

And I don't need more administrators helping me align my curriculum with ever changing standards or tracking my test scores on topics that are now misaligned. Waste a lot of time recreating lesson plans because some legislator changed everything again.

My teacher wife would agree with you. I didn't give my opinion earlier because I wanted to see where the discussion went. But IMO most of the "fiscal leak" is administrative costs, which have outstripped other costs in the education business (according to what I've read).

Administration costs and training. We spend so much time and money learning the latest educational fads, and we never have time to implement anything before the next fad comes along.

And also testing and test prep. We pay so much to Pearson that we once thought about making T-shirts that said "Property of Pearson Education." But my principal disapproved a request for an $8 set of poster markers.

As is the case with most online courses like those of @udacity and @coursera. Thousands of students will learn from any given class, and use the material a la carte.

By privatizing education and allowing competition where teacher are awarded based on student outcomes. The best teacher will eventually be the best paid.

Define “student outcomes.” Good grades? SAT exam scores? College admissions? Career earnings? Global rankings? Happy parents? Teaching is not making sprockets.

Why would they? There isn't any incentives to. They're not even allowed to choose schools for the most part. Let allow curriculum & teachers.
