What is Christianity? It seems to be whatever conservatives claim it to be.
guns, bibles, crosses, oh my!
Sam, I presume you've heard this a million times by now, but you've got to read @richardccarrier's book (I recommend the audio book), & have him on your podcast. Richard's book on mythicism is far more convincing (& thorough, & interesting) than Bart's. https://www.amazon.com/Historicity-Jesus-Might-Reason-Doubt/dp/B00UKE0UTC/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1525286794&sr=8-1 …
I'm not an expert on this subject, and as an atheist I really don't have a bone to pick, but the consensus seems to be that he was a historical character. I'm linking to an excellent blog that has a lot of anti-mythicism arguments. Check it out.https://historyforatheists.com/category/jesus-mythicism/ …
Compare that dishonest, hack, amateur warblegarble with an actual peer reviewed academic monograph on the subject by an actual expert with an actual Ph.D. in ancient history. Then notice the difference: https://www.richardcarrier.info/BooksbyRichardCarrier.html#OHJ …
Thanks. I'll check them out.
Have either of you heard of Richard Carrier?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQmMFQzrEsc …
Thank you! I was hoping someone would mention him.
Great questions and fantastic discussion. All the objects in the universe align here. Having read several of Prof Ehrman's books and supporting both his and your blogs, this was a long overdue conversation.
Richard Carrier is another deeply historical un-apologist to consider for the podcast.
He is a mythicist...a position Bart says is untenable...it would be an interesting conversation..!!
Some of the best interviews not only reveal what one thinks, but how they think. The disagreements Harris has with guest reveal the guest's thought processes as well as the host's.
@SamHarrisOrg really enjoyed your discussion with Dr. Ehrman! For the historicity of Jesus, I would recommend researching the work of Dr. Richard Carrier, the leading mythicist who has a convincing argument that Jesus probably didn’t exist. Christianity makes more sense this way.
You need to get @RichardCCarrier on.
"Christian thinkers" is probably a thing to people in his field, but out here in the real world it sounds like an oxymoron.
This should be a legit listen
Excellent discussion @SamHarrisOrg. You really need to have a NT Prof w/PhD who believes Christianity is true to answer your Qs. For ex. @profntwright.
I would be honored to come on if he is busy. I have a Phd in NT & I debated @BartEhrman publicly on these issues. What say you?
