Sam, re: your synopsis of the Ezra Klein debate... you admit you were talking past each other, but fail to see the root of the disconnect. It's not a disagreement over facts, it's over values. You believe you're objective, and science is values-free.

-
Neither is true. There are an infinite amount of potential data points in our universe. The ones we choose to study, how we choose to do it, and what we use our conclusions for are all influenced by our socially situated perspective and values.
-
What matters most to you is that we be able to discuss any data, without feeling hindered by "political correctness." What matters most to Ezra is that our use of science include a meta analysis that factors in how our values/history/social realities shape it.
-
You see a real danger in "forbidden knowledge." You don't see much of a danger in the misuse of science (even though history is rife with it)/need for meta analysis. You don't see that your position is a values judgment itself. You're "objective," others are in a "moral panic."
-
You say it's ridiculous you can't discuss race because of the color of your skin. That's not what we're saying. We're saying you should ALSO include POC. So far you've done very little of that, and cherry picked people who agree with you/reinforce your views when you did.
-
I've been a listener for years, but it's becoming increasingly tedious. Not sure how many more lectures I'll sit through about how I'm as "unreachable" as a Neo-Nazi because I disagree with you. It's a shame, because you have so many otherwise interesting discussions.

As a Sam Harris fan who was really disappointed by his handling of the whole Situation i have to say again: Klein misses some of his points, yes. But it's really astonishing to me how Sam can misses the obvious fact, that he himself isn't responding to (some) fair criticism!
-
You think Klein’s arguments about Sam having white skin make any sense with regards to the data in question?
-
That's not at all important for my view, but i think he talks about the problematic context of their conversation regarding US history: two white people talking about the “fact” that white people are more intelligent then black people. That’s being aware of a sensitive situation.
-
Harris' point was that data is data. Data is not racist. Presenting the data is not racist. Whether or not it is a sensitive topic is irrelevant to whether presenting the data is racist. Now, please provide an example of valid criticism of Harris.
-
3. Regarding context#1: If you talk in public about such a topic you are absolutely obliged to give an appropriate context. Sam failed to do this completely. And he acknowledged this could have been a mistake. I think it’s obviously one.

Sean Carroll is the whole package. Brilliant, handsome, well-spoken, kind, gracious, and loves cats. The perfect male role model. Men: Be like Sean.

Let's see. Brilliant. Me. Handsome. Me. Well-spoken. Me. Kind. Me. Gracious. Me. Loves cats. Me. Sorry, not arrogant, just channeling Bill Murray.

Groundhog Day! Also me.

And he changes poopie diapers and he loves his mother.

People will continue to belief in free will as long as they identify with the notion of the self. Convey the self as a derivative to preface the free will debate
-
I want to read more about this you just mentioned...any suggestions on the 2nd part, on "conveying the self as a derivative... "
-
Paraphrasing Harris on his podcast with Metzinger: “consciousness is primary: everything we perceive must be within the contents of consciousness, including the self; the self is not prior to consciousness, but a derivative conception in the mind”
-
To put it another way, Sam has said that essentially the self is an illusion. Meaning, we *feel* that there is an atomic thinker of thoughts in our head, that is "the self" that everything originates from. Through meditation, reasoning, you can become aware this is false.
