Sam, there's a lesson in this: you've made many efforts to open up dialogues on charged topics, in the hopes of preventing a descent into violence. But w/ topics like identity that hit so close to home, the choice is not dialogue or violence, it's silence or violence.
-
-
-
As Robin explained on your show, people do not dialogue to find truth, they dialogue to signal & draw in resources. Identity topics have massive implications for both, and that's what the real fight is about.
-
It's naive to think that people in totally different positions, with totally different incentives and motivations, who bear totally different costs, are ever going to be able to discuss such topics honestly, in earnest.
-
Ezra Klein, in particular, is not someone who has any interest in a serious discussion of these topics. He's interested in producing content that a specific audience will applaud, ideally in a way that makes him look good. He will gladly advance that interest at your expense.
-
He's talented, and is able to damage you without appearing like he's aggressively trying to. That fact makes attempts at open dialogue even more dangerous.
-
The correct approach is to recognize this unfortunate reality from the outset, and STAY AWAY. Only dialogue w/ people who have an incentive to be honest on some level, and who do not have an incentive, or an underlying desire, to do things that will cause you damage.
-
And then, in turn, try to do the same w/ ur interlocutors: avoid damaging their reputations. An example here would be JP. Yes, some of what he says is off, especially the religious stuff, but he's a nice guy, very creative, & most importantly, has no desire to make you look bad.

Digging yourself a deeper hole every time you post about his. Just move on before you embarrass yourself further.
-
How is Sam embarrassing himself? This is social justice warrior, PC nonsense. Anyone with the ability to think critically can see that Harris and Murray had a respectful discussion, and that The Bell Curve is not racist in the least.
-
He claims not to be interested in discussing racial differences but has just posted an article that supports Murray's arguments. To be so invested in defending Murray while simultaneously claiming to have no interest in this is contradictory.

Sam, you have, once again, made a series of egregiously bad decisions (without apologizing). You are seriously damaging the atheist "brand"--it will take a lot of work to undo the legacy of your childishness,anti-intellectualism, and moral thoughtlessness.https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/27/15695060/sam-harris-charles-murray-race-iq-forbidden-knowledge-podcast-bell-curve …
-
Let's also not forget Harris's scientifically unsupported comments here about race and IQ. This sort of misinformed rhetoric further empowers the sort of devastating white-on-black terror that has characterized much of US history.

I really think you should just agree to a podcast debate with Ezra. This idea that people would be bored with such a debate doesn't hold water imo. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the primary reason you've become so popular is bc of how much people enjoy hearing you debate.
-
If anything, I'd try to cut back a bit on the friendly interview shtick. We already have Rubin if we want an interview that doesn't challenge anyone.
-
Sam has consistently done "friendly interviews" like the Charles Murray one with people whom he agrees with, and is much more contentious, interrupting, willing to frame their argument uncharitably, and tone police them when they are in complete disagreement.

You should stop smearing Ezra Klein and Vox Sam. They were completely reasonable. You think every single person that criticizes you is acting in bad faith.
-
Wrong. Ezra wasn't pursuaded by Sam's perfectly reasonable points. Haier's piece wasn't published on Vox. I think Pinker and other intellectuals that agree with Harris have a responsibility to come out!
