If there is indeed something to racialist or gender essentialism, this does not discount the need to focus on areas of inequality that we can have societal control over. Too often, this kind of argument is used to dismiss the effectiveness of these efforts.

Thanks for saying that. I was thinking the same thing. When it comes to race (at the very least), this form of essentialism has been debunked, but I feel as though many people feel the reason is political instead of scientific. Hence the continued effort to reduce race to biology
-
Sam Harris and Charles Murray are the two primary reasons for that confusion, too
-
That’s fair, but I do want to be clear that I’m not stating that
@SamHarrisOrg is a racist. I’m just skeptical of most attempts to reduce race to biology and genetics.

I enjoy Sam and his work, but the lack of self awareness in this debate is striking. It’s hard to see Sam’s involvement in this as much more than Sam reflexively analogizing some of his own experiences with the reaction to Murray. Maybe just see a therapist.

Ugh. Can one of you guys just organize an interview on one of your respective casts? You overlap so much. Hash it out. You can commiserate over the difficulties of trying to be vegetarian.
-
Sam already tried; Ezra declined. I prefer Ezra’s interviews, but I consider Sam more honest and evenhanded. It could be a great conversation.
-
Ezra declined? That's highly disappointing. It'd be nice to see a bit more effort at making these discussions more substance and less ad hominem. Sam's long form interviews are the sort that allow the time and space the talking heads don't have to do so.
-
Didn't realize that Ezra had declined too bad. Maybe they can meet on neutral ground. Do a live event and have someone equally trusted moderate.
-
Around the time of the Murray interview, Vox talked some shit about the podcast, and Sam corresponded with Ezra about it, but nothing came of it.
-
Ezra confirmed today that it was Sam who rescinded the offer. I also assumed the reverse, since the last Sam talked about it he was trying to make it happen, and then recently brought it up without clarifying who declined. Very disappointing and, well, dishonest.
-
Sam never said that Ezra wouldn’t do the podcast, but Ezra did say no to publishing their correspondence, so that makes it hard to say whose fault it was that Sam thought it would be unproductive; the Chomsky emails, for instance showed Noam unwilling to engage in good will.
-
Frankly, the article just published isn’t terribly charitable, either. Not Cenk bad, but I can see why Sam expected a conversation with him to be heavy on signaling. He went hard on stuff that just doesn’t match up with the opinions Sam has shared.

You really dont care about the responsibility of being a public intellectual. I listened to ur recent podcast and it’s alarming to me that ur intellectual contributions during the recent rise in White supremacy is to champion Murray & bad mouth lefty’s that fight against racism
-
Not knocking your point, which is fair, but I think it's best to avoid 'ur' when making an intelligent comment. Prune elsewhere.
-
I agree but I needed to in order to fit in one tweet. Wanted to get the point all in a tweet without going on a long thread
-
Fair enough. Probably the correct choice.

Your talk with
@charlesmurray failed to address all the problems about his research. Sad! You never challenged him. Watch this amazing video by@dpakman before assuming Murray's work is concrete. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE9jiPyLYZA …https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/977889565238153222 …Thanks. You're on the wrong side Sam. Charles Murray was unable to explain his motivation . Clearly you picked up on it. Did you give him the Maryam Namazi open borders treatment? How many POC and women have you had on your podcast? But hey, identity politics, amirite?
-
LOL he had on Larry Elders. Sam act is very transparent now. I used like him but ever since Murray thing. I have lost all respect for him.
