I find the concept of 'expressing fewer opinions ' to be intriguing, but I'm skeptical of its utility. Right now, I'm imagining a world where thoughtful people are busy second-guessing themselves, to which the more thoughtless ones gain the keys to the kingdom. 1/2

There's no doubt that this way of thinking is a requirement in academic circles, but sadly, our passion still seems to be deeply ingrained in our politics. Sam's earlier podcasts regarding the Dunning-Kruger Effect as well as the need for experts underscore my thinking here. 2/2

Half done listening to it but of all the live podcasts Sam has posted this is already my favorite. Compared to the one I saw in D.C., I'm envious that Denver got a one-on-one and surprised that Hanson flew to Denver when for him DC was just down the road!

This was the best guest you have ever had from the standpoint of mind-blowingness. I am genuinely thinking differently than I did before the talk. There are two pities: 1) The audience questions are all but inaudible. I'm sorry Sam, I never "acclimated"

Great talk! Really liked
@robinhanson and especially his point on not sporadically having opinions on everything, a conclusion I recently had myself with great benefits not only for the individual, but it's quite a responsible attitude in terms of politics and life in general. -
‘Actually I don’t have any idea or opinion about that. Not my area of expertise at all’ said nobody in a bar ever.

Suggestion: It was hard to understand some of the questioners. It might be a good idea to give a brief one-sentence summary of questions after they're asked.
-
I'm not sure if it was the room, or the mixing, because one of the audience microphones was super loud and clear, and one sounded like it wasn't running into the soundboard. It was more like it was being picked up by the good mic via the loud speakers.
-
Yeah, I think some people have voices better suited for talking in that environment too, and some don't know how to hold the mic correctly. Some people are also bad at articulating their questions so maybe if the speakers summarize them, that'll help the audience understand.

Suppose we could be explicitly conscious of our true motives at all times...what does communication look like among with such awareness? Is it improved or degraded?
-
Our minds leak, so awareness of our own motives leaks that info out to those we talk to. So people talking who are personally aware become more aware of the motives of others as well.
-
What you've written presents, to my mind, an insoluble riddle. IF we are molded for our own good by evolution to be oblivious to our motives, if this passes for a form of social lubrication, for instance, isn't it reasonable to expect that unbroken ignorance would serve us best?
-
If your case is what evolution anticipated, yes ignorance is likely best for you personally.
-
How can it be that evolution anticipates two opposite modalities, and how can we imagine they are both optimal for whomever is assigned one or the other?

It's a great interview!
The question that comes to me is:
What does @robinhanson think about Open Source Software, re: prestige vs. dominance? OSS feels pretty selfless, but also has its component of prestige. -
Because there's less direct $ involved, people will see less dominance there. But of course there is plenty of dominance within teams.
-
Those of us that give selflessly (or not? post hoc?) to OSS certainly wish there was more $ involved.
