Am I wrong to find it amazing that some people can so confidently shout down distinguished scholars in fields that they only have middle-school understandings of?

-
To be fair, this isn't a panel of "distinguished scholars," but I suspect nothing about their behavior would change if the panel became more erudite (perhaps there would be more disruptions)
-
The organisers of this panel who went to the trouble of flying H.Pluckrose from England to speak obv believe she has a mind of distinction,as did those who recently flew her Australia.
-
I certainly respect both of them, and think they have interesting experiences and ideas, and see why people would want them on a panel. But I simply wouldn't categorize either her or Damore as leading experts
-
Damore’s memo, and the subsequent reaction to it were the topic of the panel, hence his attendance. Agree that H.Pluckrose may not be widely acknowledged as expert but she criticises the excesses of Po-mo and identity politics with a rare clarity and sincerity. Expert she is.

I have no problem whatsoever with the speaker’s message at the beginning of this clip. However, I am disturbed by calls to expel students for nonviolent protest. Speech is not more protected for those in front of a mic than for those in the audience.
-
He's talking about the one who damaged the sound equipment. That's violence.
-
No, it’s vandalism.
-
That's a false choice. Damaging the sound equipment is both vandalism and violence.pic.twitter.com/5hVbnCCZnn
-
I guess ... or perhaps the “something” is in the definition to cover animals? I tend to reserve the verb for hurting a creature... if somebody liked ripping up paper, or breaking crayons, I wouldn’t consider them violent... despite using physical force to damage something...
-
Well terms have scopes of acceptable definition and people can define it however they wish for their usage but the bottom line is it's not a form of protected non-violent protest.

We don’t tolerate fascism, so we’re going to obstruct your ability to speak and be heard. Hmmmm.

Hey Sam,
@hpluckrose from this talk would be an awesome guest to have on your podcast. She is a critic of postmodernism and intersectionality who actually understands the subject matter very well, unlike most critics of those topics. She also has strong opinions about Tea. -
Seconded.
