On podcast #30, a Google engineer refuted Sam's analogies on the subject of iPhone encryption. Sam said that the engineer "fairly demolishes those analogies." This idea -- to be willing to have one's ideas demolished -- formulated everything I wish my intellectual core to be.

But nobody knows the answer. That's just changing from one prediction to another. We don't know who's right about what will happen, and I suspect reality will be unlike anyone's expectations.
-
Yes, its speculation. But the risk is too big not to assume the worst for us humans (and also the worst for an intelligent lifeform)
-
I agree people should be thinking about it. I just don't think the value of a prediction ought to be measured by whether it's the same as Sam's prediction
-
The value is not measured solely by that. The fact that he abandoned his original position in favor of a better one is taken as evidence that it’s a better one, which happens to line up with Sam’s current one. Both could change to a better one if there is a better position.

A great example of a towering intellect combining humility to get the best answer possible to a complex problem. I wish

Bill Murray says something like this: It is very difficult to win an argument with a smart person but it is impossible to win an argument with a stupid one.

but did he really? did he even have free will?
-
what idiot wouldn't believe in free will?
-
It is the idiot that could not conceive of it otherwise
-
absurdist claptrap
-
Instead of the redundant retort, why not try coming up with an explanation or even a heuristic for how free will could exist without invoking magic or dispensing with causality.
-
The mere fact that you used your free will to reply to me proves my point. By the way, not everything can be broken down to heuristics.
-
First that’s why I said or second I’ve demonstrated agency by answering, which is not synonymous with Harris’ denial of libertarian free will.
