...or you could just ban guns altogether and enjoy the peace and safety of other nations with no gun ownership. Guns kill people, etc.

How do you do that exactly? It's like responding to the problem of crime by suggesting "we should stop crime". It's not an idea. It's rhetoric.
-
Ban guns, pass a law that all must be surrendered to police. Job done. Next issue?
-
So all the law abiding citizens turn in their guns and the problem is solved? So easy! All the bad guys I'm sure will turn in their guns as well right?

Check Australia out.

I think the USA and Australia were founded a little differently. Australia had it a little easier growing up vs the USA. Guns are apart of the US Constitution and what helped make it the best country on earth. Wish you could but I don't think you can compare the two that easily.

In Australia a gun license requires training, you must have no crim, domestic violence, or mental health history. It must be stored in a safe and at any time a police officer can check to see if it's stored correctly.

Now is not the time to be talking about gun control measures. Now is the time to have these families in our thoughts and our prayers it to make sure that they know that we as a nation are grieving with them and for them because no child should go to school and feel this way.
-
Because thoughts and prayers have done wonders in preventing this tragic loss of life
-
You misunderstood allow me to make myself clear the thoughts and prayers for the families Of this horrible horrible tragedy.
-
Yes I understood. Look my heart goes out to those affected but there needs to be action taken to try to solve this issue. Further delaying open discussion on the matter will only leave the country open to more of these tragedies.

Sam has the right idea. If you're buying a gun for self-defence, learning how to use it effectively should not deter you from purchasing it. If you're buying a gun as a toy, hours of training will certainly be a deterrent.

Logic and reason have no place here Sam. Make that license cost exorbitant and up for renewal complete with new background check (and insurance requirements) every 2-4 years. Those that wish to own a gun will figure it out. Just like pilots.

Here’s my question to you. Why is it okay to, essentially, discriminate against poor people with a constitutional right? We know higher crime areas tend to be poorer, so why should these people be deprived of their rights simply for not having the money?
-
Trying to parse your question(s) and determine what you are truly stating. Poor people wouldn't have the capital/resources to purchase weapons? I can't speak for Sam but my point is simple: people will find the capital for things they value. Car, house, gun, X-box, etc.
-
For example, I lived in the hood & worked 3 jobs in college. Was mugged 2x before I got a Concealed carry and firearm. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to afford all the fees you’re proposing. I could barely pay my bills at the time. Why should I be deprived b/c I was broke?
-
How is this any different than owning a car? We are required to own insurance and a license. you legislate for the majority and cannot legislate for every conceivable scenario. Would you suggest nothing is adjusted/done? What are your alternatives?
-
I’m not suggesting do nothing. I’m suggesting that one is a constitutional right. The other isn’t. And that poor people should have that RIGHT to defend themselves as well, no?
-
Actually, interstate travel is a constitutional right and we control that with licenses and insurance. We have also identified additional requirements to save lives and implemented them (safety belts, car inspections).
-
Let me answer this squarely as people keep liking it. Interstate travel is. Not car ownership. If the constitution wrote In that the vehicles ownership to travel the interstates should not be infringed upon, then you’d have an argument. But that’s not constitutionally based.
