Interesting that one can edit Facebook posts but not tweets. Why is that?

FB shows a history of the edits so you can still see the original post. Twitter should do the same.

Deleting and tweeting the edited version is effectively the same thing.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

How’s that different than deleting and retweeting?
-
When you delete a tweet, the original structure of the conversation (thread) is gone. All replies become orphan tweets without the context of the original tweet. I believe that this is what most people asking for the editing feature would like to preserve.
-
if preserving the structure isn't that important, they could fix it on the client side. Just allow the users to clone an old tweet into a new tweet and modify it before sending it. Also, give the users the option of deleting the cloned tweet before sending the new modified one.

Not if it's part of a conversation or a thread or whichever situation where context is needed.
-
But if someone edits their tweet, that can change the context. I don't want my reply to one tweet to show up as if it was a reply to some new tweet (even if the tweeter claims the new tweet is merely an edited version of the old one).
-
Facebook lets people see the edit history if I'm not mistaken. Would solve that issue in my opinion.
-
Exactly. Twitter should do this.

I don't want another Facebook.https://twitter.com/ptfrd/status/960218077421035521 …

And that is perfectly fine. It's not your original objection though.

Could also just have an "edited" tag somewhere below the tweet that displays the original text when it's hovered over.

Or: limit editing to, say, 10 minutes after the tweet was posted.
-
No, 10 minutes can be enough to get thousands of likes and retweets for big Twitter users.
-
Fair point. Perhaps alert retweeters that an edit has taken place (in notifications) and give them an option to retract if necessary.

It would be messy to destroy RTs when original is edited. It would cripple entire threads stemming from them. Twitter is probably worried it would undermine confidence in their platform, increase frustration.
-
You can keep the response threads alive just without the original tweet. Same happens when a tweet gets deleted if I'm not mistaken. "Tweet is not available / was edited." or whatever.
-
But then, potentially, you’ve got people arguing over a point that no longer exists. People will use this to game people pretty easily. Intentionally write a provocative tweet, if it gets no traction, no harm, but it it goes viral, just edit and watch the chaos ensue.
-
People needlessly arguing on Twitter doesn't sound like this platform at all :) But I don't quite understand your point. People would know that it has been edited. Like they know now, when a tweet has been deleted.
-
Imagine the confusion and disruption of finding the point you’re arguing about has been altered. I think Twitter simply thinks that’s the worse of their two options: allow edits or let mistakes stand. I’ve made typos before I regret. It only made me take more care in crafting.
-
If that is their stand then fine. But it needs to be communicated. It is a communication company after all and leaving the customer hanging around being confused as to why such an option doesn't exist can put people over their frustration threshold.
-
Nobody needs twitter, so anyone getting upset about twitter seems silly in the first place.
-
Right. Don't think the company should adopt that stance though.
