I don't know why people get a hard on over JP. He's a store brand Kermit the frog. I miss the days of the four horsemen.

Modern atheists cherry-pick values from Judeo-Christian values. Just like those were cherry-picked from older religions. The values that were thought to most likely work best long term would be adopted. The religion would survive if the values were truly superior.

He then rises from the fire reborn more than a man. He is the hero of all heroes. An ideal to aim for. However, Christian fundamentalists take and preach these stories to be scientific facts where they don't belong. Realism in our culture in general has killed nuance. 2/2

“If you base views on biological evolution, the truth is that which is most biologically successful.”
@benshapiro &@jordanbpeterson agrees. Why you gotta say that Ben

.

We can agree religion & capacity to experience it evolved. Same as say how our organs evolved.
But.. -
Does it say anything about what’s true outside of its functions? What exists today is simply evolutionary success story according to past environments. A belief can be false, but lead to successful actions. Actions one would take if the truth was known.

It seems to me that religion has a great deal of utility. As an atheist, it pains me to say this, but I’m not convinced that the world would be better with no religion. Of course, just because belief in gods is useful doesn’t imply in any way that the god hypothesis is true.
-
I agree. Religion is much more than a set of beliefs. With wisdoms, truths & falsehoods. It is like a matrix for a society, that provides a framework for how to live. The collective psyche evolved alongside it and it is helplessly dependent on it.
-
The reality is most are not capable of building values from ground up, that can work for the individual as well as the society. They won’t survive unplugged. Some lies must be told, because the truth will break society. Sam is an outlier, Atheism is not scalable, religion is.
-
I don’t think I’ll go as far as saying “most are not capable”, but I also can’t get myself to Hitch’s position, which is essentially that religion has no redeeming qualities. I think there are *some* who respond better to being told what to do and an invisible cop watching them.
-
fair point. we won’t know for sure unless it’s tested.

This conversation gives me hope for humanity. I had the same one a week ago. I’m with
@BretWeinstein - the religious algorithms need updating but are far from being without worth. - 2 more replies

I try to get into
@jordanbpeterson but he’s like a college student who took Psych 101 and now knows everything -
And you’re like?
-
He's somebody that doesn't know what he doesn't know and is convinced that truth is hidden in complexities so he criticizes those that have a strong foundation of truth as "just some Baffoon that took psych 101".
-
yes referencing Dunning-Kruger very appropriate!
-
Dropping Dunning-Kruger on Twitter seems an awfully lot like a post psych 101 move. See how easy and meaningless it is to throw around ad hominems?
-
